Welcome to 1st Grade in Room 12!

Hi!  My name is Dana Boardman and this is my twentieth year of teaching, all of which have been in OPS.  This is my fourteenth year at Picotte.  I spent a few years teaching fourth grade, second grade, and ESL.  I am currently enjoying my thirteenth year as a first grade teacher.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Science Degree in Reading with an endorsement in English as a Second Language.  When I'm not busy with school I enjoy spending time with my husband Jason, and my two daughters Emma (13) and Eden (9).

Classroom Notes & Procedures

Birthdays:  Students may either bring store bought treats or pencils/bubbles/prizes etc. on their birthdays if they wish.  They will pass them out at the end of the day.  Please send invitations to parties through the U.S. mail unless the whole class is invited, so there are not any hurt feelings by passing them out at school.

Students will have 45 minutes for recess/lunch. Our lunchtime this year is from 11:50-12:20. The students go outside for recess from 12:20-12:35.  Students eating hot lunch most days should bring a check for how many days they want to eat hot lunch.  The office will keep track of the credits and let you know when lunch money is necessary.  If your child will usually be eating cold lunch and only wanting hot lunch on occasion, you may send daily lunch money in an envelope.  Please put your child’s name and write “lunch money” on the envelope.  Students eating cold lunch from home may bring money for milk.  If you will be joining your child for lunch, please send a note to school with them that day.  The kitchen needs to know the total lunch count in the morning to prepare for lunchtime.  No fast food may be brought in for lunch because of health codes.  You may refer to the school handbook for further information.

Book Orders:  I will send home book orders on a monthly basis.  You are free to order from any or all of the book clubs.  You can make a check for the orders. At times, there will be more than one type of book order coming home. You may write one check because the same company owns them all, even though they have different names on the front covers.  Please do not send cash.  Please make your check out to Scholastic Book Clubs.  Our class also has a class code to order online.  You may place your order online and the books will be shipped to our school.  Our code is: https://orders.scholastic.com/HJ6Z3

Star of the Week:  I will send home a Star of the Week folder with each student one time this year.  You can assist your child with writing/drawing things about him/her on index cards.  There will be topics such as favorite food, favorite color etc. This is an opportunity for your child to bring show and tell items to share with the class. The directions will be in the folder that comes home with your child.

Homework: I do not send a lot of homework home because they work very hard all day long in class.  I like the students to read or be read to each night.
The students will be bringing home books from my room to practice.  These will be in a clear plastic bag with a handle.  They are to read these to themselves and to someone else for practice.  This will start toward 2nd quarter. I like them to practice learning their addition and subtraction facts so they are memorized by the end of the year. I will send home paper flashcards to help with practicing.  I also like students to practice spelling words each week and sight words throughout the year. Occasionally, if time is not being used wisely in class, I will send homework to be finished at home with an explanation to you why it did not get finished in class.

Home to School Folder (Friday Folder): This folder is gold with a red tie on the back.  It will be sent home each Friday. This will contain important papers that are from the office, as well as any work your child has completed and is ready for you to view.  I will need to send important papers home during the week, too. Each child has a mailbox that will have various papers in it at the end of each day. Please check your child’s book bag nightly and return any important papers the following school day.  Your child will need to bring the Friday folder back to school on Mondays.

Restroom Procedures:
We will go to the restroom, as a class, many different times of the day.  The students may go first thing in the morning before coming into the room.  We take a restroom break in the morning at 9:30.  We will take another break before lunch at 11:45.  We will also go after recess at 12:40. I understand that students can have an occasional emergency, and I will let them go. Please help me by encouraging your child to go to the restroom when we go as a class.

Students will know the class rules, school rules, and procedures.  They will be expected to follow them.  The school wide behavior program consists of each student having pinto horses for each day.  The first graders each have two pintos on our behavior sheet.  This sheet is with the class all day. If they break a rule, they will first receive a verbal warning.  If it continues, they will lose half of a pinto on our behavior chart.  If they are still not making a good choice with their behavior they will lose the other half of the pinto on the chart. If the whole first pinto is crossed off, they will go sit at a separate desk and fill out a problem-solving sheet that they have to draw or write what they were doing and what they should have been doing.  Either they or myself will write what rule was broken.   If a child receives one of these problem solving sheets and has to lose a whole pinto once in a great while, it is usually enough to deter the problem.  I will send the sheet home to have you read and sign the sheet.  Your child will return it to me the next day.  If by chance a child has lost one pinto and then loses half of the other pinto that day, they are sent to the PAC room and you will receive a phone call letting you know about our day.  If they return from the PAC room and are still having a rough time following rules, then they will lose the other half of the second pinto.  Losing both pintos in one day will result in a visit with one of the principals.  You will also receive a call if this happens.

Your child will bring home a monthly calendar to indicate specials and other important dates to remember.

We have P.E. once a week for 50 minutes.  Students must have tennis shoes that tie or velcro.  Shoes must have backs on them.  Students may leave a pair in their lockers or wear them on P.E. days.

We have Music once a week for 50 minutes.

We have Art once a week for 50 minutes.  Students need an art shirt to be kept in their lockers.
We have Library Skills once a week for 50 minutes.  Students need to remember to return their library books the day before all library days.

Our counselor is Mrs. Gaeta.  The students go to her room for 50 minutes each week to discuss various social issues- friendship, getting along, etc.

Winter Procedures

It seems early to be talking about this, but we do go outside even when it is cold and snowy.  The students will need to have coats, hats, mittens or gloves.  They will need snow pants and snow boots when it is snowy out.  They are allowed to play in the snow if they have snow gear.  If they do not, they will still be going out, but they will have to stay on the blacktop.  When the time comes, you may send their gear in a large plastic bag.
