ALL ABOUT ME

This will be my 14th year at Picotte Elementary. I have taught 12 years in Kindergarten. My first year of teaching I taught 2nd grade and taught one year in 1st grade. I recently finished and received my Masters in Educational Administration from Concordia University. I am very excited after 13 years to continue my education and further my knowledge in a new educational field.

I have been married for 12 years to my husband Steve. We also have 3 daughters. Madeline is 11 years old and will be in 6th grade at Buffett this year. Ella is 7 1/2 years old and in 2nd Grade at Picotte. My youngest is Evelyn and she is 5 years old and going to Preschool for one more year.

My hobbies include spending time with my family, golfing when ever I get a chance, singing, and dancing( I used to take an adult tap class that kept me on my toes, but with 3 girls they are the ones keeping me on my toes).

I grew up in Blair Nebraska, which is a country mile North of Omaha (20 miles) if everyone is familiar with the wonderful Woodhouse Ford commercial! I went to college at Kansas State University, where I was a member of the KSU Marching Band Color Guard for 4 years. It was a great time! I got to go to all the KSU football home games as well as all bowl games. Nothing like performing in front of 60,000 people!!!   Go Wildcats!!!

Reading

August-Letters Aa, Bb, Cc

September-Letters Dd, Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii

October-Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp

November-Letters Qq, Rr, Ss, Tt, Uu, Vv

December-Letters Ww, Xx, Yy, Zz

We will be really concentrating on our letters and sounds the first few months of school. We will make sure we know how to write the letters correctly on the lines. We will sing songs and learn the sign language for each letter.

We will also start learning our sight words starting in September. We will learn 75 sight words by the end of the school year.

We will start our small groups in September and work on letters, sounds, sight words, as well as reading small books and learning parts of a story.

ACTIVITIES TO DO AT HOME

Learning letters and sounds: Make sets of letter cards and play memory or go fish with those cards.

*Don't forget to include the sound when you get a match*

Learning Sight Words: You can also make two sets of sight word cards and play memory or go fish with those cards.

*I would suggest only working on 10 words at a time. Working on too many words at a time will not lead to mastery. When those 10 words are mastered, add 5 more words until all words are mastered.*

Classroom Information

Curriculum- We will be learning about Phonics, Reading, Writing, Math, Spelling, Handwriting, Social Studies, Science

Specials-We will have several different specials throughout our school year. Music, P.E., Library, and Art are our special we have during the school year. We will have each special once a week. Library will check-out every week and will also include library skill as well as computer skills. Book Buddies will be once every other week. This is where we are paired up with 3rd graders-Mrs. Heiss's room and each child will get their own buddy and do a lot of fun activities. It is a good positive experience for both grades.

Birthdays-We do celebrate birthdays in our room!! Your child will get to decorate a birthday crown for the day and get to visit the principal for a special treat. They may bring treats for everyone in the room. Please only bring enough treats for the class. I will not allow you to visit other classrooms. The treats need to be purchased at a store and absolutely no homemade treats( except for me!!) If your child's birthday falls on a weekend, please let me know what day you would like to celebrate so I can be prepared. If your child's birthday falls in the summer we will celebrate towards the end of the school year.

Behavior Expectations-I expect that every student follow the rules of our classroom and our school. We follow a school wide behavior plan. All students start on the Positive Pinto everyday. If they are not following the rules I will remind them once, If I have to remind the child again they will move their stick to the Yellow Pinto. This means they have 5 minutes of recess or center time. If they need to be reminded again. The child will move their stick to Blue Pinto, in which they will then have 10 minutes of recess or center time. They will also have to do a problem solving sheet that discuss their issues of the day. This will be sent home and signed and returned by parents. If moved again the child will move their stick to the Orange Pinto which is the PAC room where they go and take a break and discuss their problems with Mrs. M. and will miss recess or center time. Parents will be called at this time. If the child is still having issues they will be moved to Red Pinto and need to discuss their issues with the principal and parents will be called. If your child stays on the Positive Pinto all week they will be rewarded with a treat or prize for the treasure box!

Field Trips- We will have 1 field trip this year. We will ask for donations in order for our class to attend the field trip. All permission slips must be signed and returned in order for child to attend the field trip.  If we do not receive enough donations we will not be able to attend. You will need to fill out the volunteer application in order to attend a fieldtrip and volunteer in the classroom.

Calendar- There will be a monthly calendar that will go home at the end of every month to tell you the activities and specials your child has for the next month. Each child usually likes to post this on their refrigerator to what specials they have that day.

We are going Bananas over you!!!- Each child will be chosen to be the Beaming Banana of the Week. This is a special time where your child will be able to bring pictures of their family and post them on our Beaming Banana board. They may also bring items to share that are special to them. The pictures will be up all week and your child will be able to share them on Friday. They may bring their items anytime throughout the week or if it is tough to part with the items, bringing them just on Friday is ok too!

Volunteers-I will ask for volunteers in my room at the beginning of the school year. A coordinator will contact you and let you know of the date and time. My volunteers will start the beginning of October when the children are settled and our class has established a nice routine. I will also being asking for a parent who would like to coordinate my volunteers. This role would be to contact the volunteers either by email or phone and ask if they are available to volunteer on the dates I give to the coordinator.

Recess- We will have a lunch recess every day and one other recess throughout the day. Each recess is 15 minutes. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for recess.  In the winter we will go out everyday unless it is too cold. They must have snowpants and snowboots to play in the snow. Don't forget hat and gloves!!

Lunch-Our lunch time everday is 12:15-12:30. Please feel free to join your child for lunch anytime. Just make sure you check in at the office. The kids love it if a parent can eat lunch with them. Please remember no fast food or take out food is allowed in the cafeteria. Your child may choose to eat the school lunch or bring their own lunch. Please make sure your child's name is on their lunch box. So many kids have the same lunch box anymore. Lunch costs are $1.45 for children and $3.10 for adults. .35 Cents for an extra milk or milk with cold lunch.

Change of regular schedules- If your child is suppose to go home a different way then usual, please either call the office and let them know or please send me a note or an email letting me know of change of plans. I will not send your child a different place if they just tell me. I need to know with an email, note, or call. Also if you are going on vacation please the office know as well as myself. I will send work home if necessary and if I have enough notice.
